Use this screen to report the death of a tagged but unregistered calf on your holding.
You should not use this screen to register imported animals or animals born elsewhere.
The page is split into 3 sections: information entry; check information; and send the information.
This is where you enter the information. You must enter the calf’s eartag number, date of birth, date of death, breed, sex, and dam eartag. The sire eartag is optional and can be entered if known. When you have finished, click on the ‘Add to list’ button.
Details on each item of animal information:
Eartag - enter the eartag of the calf you wish to register. There are three ways you can do this.
If the eartag you wish to use is not in the list of unused eartags, phone the BCMS Helpline.
Breed - To see a drop-down list of breeds, click on the arrow next to the box. Select the breed of the animal. You will need to change it when you enter animals of a different breed. If you can't find a suitable breed, please phone the BCMS Helpline.
Hint: if you prefer to use the keyboard rather than the mouse, you can enter the first letter of the breed code to find the breed codes starting with that letter. You can then use the up and down arrow keys or the select button to search for other breeds beginning with that letter.
If you know the breed code you can also type it into the box
Sex - To select the sex of the calf, click on the circle next to the 'M' for male or 'F' for female.
Date of birth - Enter a date of birth in the format dd/mm/yyyy. For example, 1 January 2009 will be entered as 01/01/2009. You can use the shortcuts including 1/1/9, 1 1 9, 1-1-9, as they will all be changed to 01/01/2009. Or you can click on the ‘calendar’ button to select the date. This can be helpful if you know what day of the week the calf was born on.
If the date of birth is more than six months ago, you will not be able to send your application using CTS Online. You can either complete a paper pre-printed application form (CPP12) and return it to the BCMS in the post, or phone the BCMS helpline to register this animal.
Date of death - same as Date of birth. Also the date of death cannot be in the future or before the date of birth.
Genetic dam identity - Please enter the identity of the genetic dam of the calf. To see a list of all female cattle registered as being on your holding in the last 27 days, click on the arrow next to the ‘Genetic Dam’ box. You can select the eartag from the list. If the list is very long, try entering the last few numbers of the dam eartag in the box, to see only those that include those numbers. If the genetic dam is not in this list, please enter the identity in the same format as it is shown on its passport/official documentation.
Surrogate dam identity - Please enter the identity of the surrogate dam if relevant. You are also required to add details of the genetic dam. If it is an embryo transfer then add ‘embryo trans’ into the genetic dam field.
Birth dam checks will apply to the surrogate dam if you have completed this box, otherwise they will apply to the genetic dam.
The birth dam you enter should meet the following requirements.
If the birth dam does not meet these requirements you will get a warning message. Please phone the BCMS helpline if you need help.
Click here to go to Report death of unregistered animal Errors and Warnings information
If the birth dam has been registered by BCMS with missing information, a warning will be displayed. You will be able to send an application using CTS Online but must accept the warning.
Sire identity - enter the identity of the calf's sire, if known. You can only enter letters, numbers and spaces in this box, please do not try to add any other character.
If the sire identity you enter matches more than one eartag, select it from the drop-down list.
Or you can select from a drop-down list by clicking on the arrow next to the input box. This will list all sire identities recorded as being on your holding between 180 days and 300 days ago.
The first sire identity you enter will automatically be entered for other calves you register during this session or until you change it.
Animals recorded on the Cattle Tracing System as being on your holding are shown in the drop-down lists in order of official animal identity, excluding the check digit.
When you have clicked the ‘Add to list’ button this moves the calf's details to the second half of the page and adjusts the counter on the first line of this section. You can then enter more deaths/births in section 1.
Delete from list - if you want to delete one of the animals from the list, click on the circle to the left of the eartag and click the ‘Delete’ button.
Correct details in list - if you need to correct the information in one of the summary lines, click on the circle to the left of the eartag number and then click the ‘Edit’ button. This will move the information to the first section for you to correct. When you have made the changes, click on the ‘Replace in list’ button. This will replace the information in section 2.
When you are happy with all the information in section 2 click on the ‘send’ button to send it to CTS . You will then see a feedback receipt, which shows the information you have sent to CTS. You can print this by clicking on the ‘print’ symbol.
If you realise you have made a mistake after sending the information to CTS, please contact the BCMS helpline as soon as possible.
You can see information that has just been sent using CTS Online in the ‘Recorded Events (Births)’ section on the View Cattle Summary page. You will not receive a passport for animals registered as dead.
