Uploads and Downloads

Uploads – general

If you keep cattle records on your own computer, you can send information from your own files to CTS Online to report cattle births, deaths of registered animals or movements. You can also upload a list of animals in order to download their details from CTS to your computer.

Your information must be in a comma-separated values (CSV) file and must be in a specific format. (For full details of the format go to Information for Keepers on the main menu)

The basic structure of the file is a file header followed by a series of detail records representing the information to be sent. Each line has a record type that follows straight after the file name (which is present on every line).

If the format of the file is wrong, the file will be rejected. The errors will be automatically displayed on an error page. You will need to correct the format and upload the file again.

Choose which type of file you wish to upload by clicking on the circle to the left of ‘Births’, ‘Movements/Deaths’ or ‘Eartags of Animals for Cattle Details Download’. Then enter the full path name for the file including the drive and directory, for example c:\temp\eartag01.csv. You may find it easier to use the ‘Browse’ button. This will prompt you to choose the location and file name.

Click on the ‘Upload file’ button to start the upload.

If the upload is successful, you will be taken to another page to continue the process of registering your births or movements/deaths or downloading cattle details.

Upload to download details of cattle from your holding

If you have successfully uploaded a list of animals to download their details, you will be taken to the Download Details of Cattle from your Holding page where you can continue with the download.

The eartag numbers of the animals in your file are displayed. If there is an error with an animal, this will be highlighted. You can check your list, delete or add animals, and then proceed to download their details and movement histories.

An example of a valid file for uploading is shown below. The details of 5 animal records have been saved in a file named myeartags.csv
